My take on the Event

General Race Comments:
Gunung Angsi Challenge is 1 of 4 Challenge circuit that was introduced/ organized by Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Sembilan backed by State of N9 Government. The challenge series involved of 4 most prestigious Gunung at N9 which is Gunung Angsi, Gunung Besar Hantu, Gunung  Tampin and Gunung Datuk. Its target is to help promote the eco-tourism industry in N9.

I rated Gunung Angsi Challenge 2018 as an A-race. There is just none to dislike about the event. All are well managed. The volunteers, the crew, BOMBA and APM did wonderfully. The facilities, medics, drinks, markers and marshalls are just good. Gunung Angsi Challenge 2018 was organized by DRD International S/B and 30ascend services

Event info pre-race/ pre-registration:
Most information’s are ready when GAC2018 start promoting the event pre-reg.

How was the registration & REPC process:
There are 2 session for REPC. 1st session is 1 day bfr the event. Runners who came from afar could still collect their kit on early morning day of the event for the 2nd session. I was told there were breakfast served on the morning too

Specific mandatory pre-registration/prerequisite comments:
No pre-requisite so no mandatory gear check

Race site / accommodation facilities:
Race site - Spacious space for Start/ Finish. Big S/F arch area and lively emcee speaking Negeri 9 ‘slang’. The area was already full of public facilities such as toilets, surau, parking spaces, resting hut and camping site.

Flag-off process:
All participants had to walk from the entrance of Taman Eko Ulu Bendul for about 200-300meters to the Start line. Race Director promptly gave race briefing prior 15mins bfr the flag off. 1st flagoff at 7.30am sharp for competitive category followed by 2nd flagoff at about 7.45am for non-competative. The FO was smooth.

L-R, Me, Apek and Mr Kasot bfr flag off

Was the course well-marked, marshaled, and accurate:
The course were very well marked with reflector marker. Trail that are not part of the course were crossed with red warning marker

There were marshals at critical junction and some at most very technical site. The organizer even put a ladder to ease the runner at very critical descent part. And some ascent/ descent part were secured with securing rope.

Theres no distance marker but imho its OK

Waterstation/ aid-station
There are 4 waterstation/ aid station/ check points including the starting point. 1st WS/CP at Bukit Putus Trailhead for the 1st 3.5KM, 2nd at Angsi Peak after 8KM and 3rd at Kem Tangga Batu at 11KM. The WS location imho is located nicely.

Course-Specific Comments:
Mostly runable with some nice elevation climb and descent.

We were presented with 3.5KM tarmac ascent from the Start line to Bukit Putus trailhead (1st WS/CP). The marshall here are to put a sticker to our bibs as a proof we ran the 1st segment. IMHO, it is a nice starting route segment in order to prevent bottle neck entering the trail. Then we would have to climb a set of stairs bfr finally entering the trail.

Still smiling aa?

There were ‘rapid ascent section’ warning upon entering the trail and it really serve its purpose. We have to climb for almost 4KM with more than 550m elevation gain here before reaching the Angsi Peak at 825m for 2nd WS/CP. FYI, the organizer put a COT for 3hrs from starting point to here.

WS/CP 2 Angsi Peak bfr the descent

We were given a plastic bracelet as a proof we reached the 2nd WS/CP. Then we start descent to Bukit Botak with very technical and very steep section. There were roots everywhere and you have to be more cautious with the steps. Even though the trail is big enough to fit 2-3 persons but it’s still very dangerous. After 2KM of 500m descent we need to cross 2 small stream then 3KM of runnable trail until finishing line.
